What is Cosmelan peel?

The Cosmelan peel system is intensive regime consisting of 12 months that visibly corrects the presence of hyperpigmentation through the use of a 2 step process.

The first step you will achieve in clinical settings and it consists of a powerful mask applied to the skin for up to 12 hours (dependant on your skin type) followed by a cream consisting of a number of tyrosinase inhibitors to prevent the over production of melanin.

This combination process targets hyperpigmentation from within the layers of the skin, and re-educates your melanocytes to inhibit the overproduction of melanin over a 12 month time period.

Cosmelan peels is a day by day process of advanced medical aesthetics treatment that has been developed specifically for moderate and severe hyperpigmentation cases.

Cosmelan Peel Before and After

Before the treatment our aestheticians will do an in depth consultation and skin examination to assess the extent of your hyperpigmentation and if this treatment is the best option for you.

Following this you will begin using a skin prep kit for a minimum of 2 weeks so depending on your skin type, to limit irritation, and begin inhibiting the overproduction of melanin.

48 hours prior to the Cosmelan depigmentation peel treatment in clinic, it is recommended to start with a chemical peel to begin to break down the pigmentation so this will also exfoliate the upper layer of the skin, and allow the Cosmelan treatment to penetrate more effectively.

After the Consultation

The first stage of your Cosmelan peel in London you would need to do in the clinic, so on the day of your in clinic treatment you will go home with the Cosmelan peel mask on your skin for a set amount of hours which will be instructed by your aesthetician. You will be advised of all necessary home care to do on the next 3 days.

On day 3/4 your skin will feel very tight and tingling, as if it is going to crack this is because it will!

From the 4th day you will begin using your Cosmelan 2 at home treatment and that’s when you will have a rigorous skincare routine to stick to following your Cosmelan peel, and it is important to follow all the required steps to get the best results from the treatment.

What’s next?

3-4 months after your in clinic Cosmelan treatment you may notice your pigmentation has become more prominent and this is because Cosmelan has drawn all the hyperpigmentation from the Dermal layers (these are the deeper layers of the skin) to the Epidermal layers (these are the more superficial layers), from this point is when you can start incorporating regular treatments to break the pigmentation from the surface.

Throughout this in depth skin peel system your aesthetician will be with you to guide you with advice and knowledge.

How does the Cosmelan Peel work?

To understand how the Cosmelan Depigmenting Peel works you have to understand how hyperpigmentation occurs on the skin: everyone produces melanin which is what gives you your natural skin colour and certain factors including; sun exposure and hormones etc, so it can trigger the over production of melanin, as the melanocytes are being produced at a faster rate than the skin cycle this is when melanin is over stimulated and causes hyperpigmentation on the skin.

Cosmelan depigmentation peel works by deeply exfoliating your skin with a unique combination of active ingredients that speed up cell turnover rapidly to draw pigmentation from the deep dermal layers to the superficial epidermal layers to give patients both short and long-term results.

Cosmelan works more effectively than a standard chemical peel because it works to stop the reoccurrence of hyperpigmentation from the root by regulating the overproduction of melanin, whereas regular chemical peels act on the surface of the problem.

Whilst Cosmelan is thought to be a one-time remedy, the treatment actually includes 4 phases that transform this treatment into a protocol to banish and manage hyperpigmentation through deep exfoliation and re-education of the skin cells.

Cosmelan is one of the options we offer for the pigmentation alongside other procedures at our clinic:

– Laser Toning

– Chemical Peels

– Medical Camouflage

– Dermamelan Intimate Peels

And other procedures including medical professional assistance.

Is the Cosmelan Depigmentation Peel a one-off treatment?

The Cosmelan Depigmenting Peel system is a two-part method that spans over 12 months and this includes one in clinic treatment, and an intensive homecare regime. With more severe cases of hyperpigmentation a second treatment may be needed.

Can pigmentation come back after Cosmelan?

This can depend on what triggered the pigmentation in the first place, if the trigger is still present then it’s likely hyperpigmentation will reoccur. There are 7 main triggers for pigmentation including; sun/UV exposure, medication, hormones, genetics, exposure to chemical substances, ageing, and blemishes/imperfections on the skin.

Can Cosmelan Peel be performed on the body?

Yes! The Cosmelan Depigmentation Peel can also be used on the body, on areas such as the back, shoulders, arms décolletage and hands, which all commonly experience forms of hyperpigmentation.

How quickly will my pigmentation disappear?

This varies per client because this can take anywhere from 4-8 weeks to longer for some patients. On average an 80% reduction can be seen from the 4 week mark but this can be more or less.
