What is Radiesse?

Radiesse is a dermal filler and a skin booster. It is made of calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA), an inorganic component of some types of body tissues. CaHA acts as a scaffold when injected into the skin, and stimulates the production of collagen and elastin to help structure the facial tissue.

It is the first and only FDA-approved CaHA dermal filler that can be injected to improve lines, wrinkles, and volume loss in the lower face and back of the hands.

The results of Radiesse are unique in both immediate and long-term improvement. Right after the injection, you can see the improvement from the volumising effect of the gel matrix that acts as scaffolding. The long-term result can be seen as collagen and elastin are formed through this scaffold promoting renewed and smoothed skin structure.

This treatment can be combined with the following procedures:

– Anti Wrinkle Injections

– IPL

–Skin Boosters

–Chemical peels

–HIFU

During your consultation, you can discuss these combinations of treatments and create a bespoke treatment plan just for you. This allows you to target your specific concern and ensure it’s a problem of the past.

Before

During your consultation, we will design an exceptional plan that best suits you and your skin concerns.

It is important to let your practitioner know your medical history, including any allergic reactions, taking medication like blood thinners, underlying medical conditions such as bleeding disorder or keloid scarring, or any skin treatments you have had before. If you want to have Radiesse filler on your hands, don’t forget to mention any diseases, injuries, or disabilities of the hands.

Additionally, avoiding alcohol before treatment reduces the risk of bruising. For best results, if you are planning to get any energy-based treatments such as IPL, laser hair removal, or radiofrequency, it’s advised to either get this before the procedure or 2-4 weeks after.

After

After the procedure, you can expect bruising, redness, swelling, pain, itching, and other local side effects. With the injection in the back of the hand, performing activities may be temporarily difficult. In some rare cases, nodules, bumps/lumps, and sensation loss can also be seen.

It is important to avoid strenuous activities, including exercising, and swimming, and refrain from using hot tubs, steam/sauna rooms, or tanning beds for at least 48 hours until any swelling or redness has resolved.

Don’t rub, touch, or wash the treated area for at least four hours after treatment. Applying sunscreen is important to prevent sun damage.

Please notify us if you experience any unusual discomfort. We are always available to provide timely support whenever you need it.

What areas can Radiesse Filler treat?

There are two formulations of Radiesse: Radiesse and Radiesse(+).

Your practitioner will choose the best product and design a treatment plan based on your skin concerns and desired outcomes.

Pre jowl folds:

Volume loss in the skin can cause the areas on the sides of the chin to sag along the jawline and this can even create folds

Smile Lines (nasolabial folds):

These are deep creases that extend from the corner of your nose to the corner of your mouth. They can make you look tired and older

Corners of the mouth:

These are called oral commissures. Lines here can make your mouth look downturned, making you look tired, old, or sad

Jawline and Chin Lines:

Radiesse Filler can be used on adults over 21 to improve jawline definition and contour

Hands:

Radiesse Filler improves the appearance of the hands by restoring the volume loss from ageing and minimising the veins and tendons’ visibility.

How long does Radiesse Dermal Filler last?

We can see clinical effects as a consequence of collagen production for more than a year in many patients. However, number of previous sessions, lifestyle habits, and some other factors can affect the longevity of Radiesse dermal filler. For example, having other treatments such as HIFU Ultrasound, having skin boosters to help skin rejuvenation, and maintaining good skin care. You can also maintain the results by having regular maintenance injections.

Who can’t have the Radiesse Dermal Filler Treatment?

People who are/have:

  • Severe allergic reactions or hypersensitivity to components
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
  • We can’t inject Radiesse dermal filler over any permanent foreign implants
  • Bleeding disorder
  • Body dysmorphic disorder
  • Active inflammation or infections at the site of the injection
  • Hypertrophic scars

What is the difference between hyaluronic acid-based fillers and Radiesse?

The most important difference is that although they are both biodegradable fillers, which means our body can metabolise the product after a certain amount of time, Radiesse dermal filler cannot be dissolved or removed like hyaluronic acid-based fillers. This is because we have hyaluronidase enzymes and therefore can break down hyaluronic acid-based fillers if desired. However, we don’t have such a product to dissolve calcium hydroxylapatite.

Other than that, unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, which fill lines, wrinkles, and folds, Radiesse dermal filler is a collagen stimulator that can improve skin glow, tightness, and contour for up to 1 year or more.

Is Radiesse safe?

Yes, Radiesse dermal filler and skin booster treatment are totally safe procedures when done by a licensed and experienced professional. Our team at Continental Skin Clinic consists of GMC registered doctors so you are in safe hands.

What is the difference between Sculptra and Radiesse Filler?

Sculptra is made of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), while Radiesse filler is composed of calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA). They are both biostimulators that induce skin rejuvenation by stimulating collagen production in the skin.

We can see both immediate and long-lasting results for up to over a year with Radiesse, however, Sculptra results are more long-lasting for over 3 years.

Although they are both safe procedures if injected by experienced professionals, there is a higher risk of nodule formation in Sculptra compared to Radiesse, based on the studies.

We use RADIESSE when we aim to have more definition and contour, whereas SCULPTRA is for volume intentions.
