Laser Hair Removal in London
For All Skin Tones, Including Dark Skin
Reduce unwanted hair and the need for frequent shaving with laser hair removal tailored to your skin.
At our doctor-led aesthetic clinic in London, we use 1064 nm Nd laser technology for long-term hair reduction. This wavelength is particularly well suited to darker skin tones, where careful selection of the laser and treatment settings is essential.
We assess your skin, hair and medical history before recommending a personalised course.
Laser Hair Removal for Dark Skin
Darker skin contains more melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour. Because hair removal lasers also target pigment, treatment must be selected carefully to reduce unwanted heating of the surrounding skin.
The 1064 nm Nd wavelength is absorbed less strongly by surface melanin than shorter wavelengths commonly used for hair removal. This makes it an established option for treating dark hair on brown and Black skin, including deeper skin tones.
Appropriate settings, cooling and careful assessment remain essential. No laser treatment is completely free of risk.
How Laser Hair Removal Works
Laser energy is absorbed by pigment within the hair and converted into heat. This damages structures within the follicle to reduce future hair growth.
Hair grows in cycles, and treatment works best on follicles in their active growth phase. A course of appointments is therefore needed to target different hairs as they become active.
The aim is long-term hair reduction. Over time, you may notice fewer hairs, slower regrowth and less need for shaving.
Who Is Suitable?
Laser hair removal can be considered across light, medium and dark skin tones. It generally works best on dark, coarse hair.
Suitability depends on:
- Your skin tone and recent sun exposure
- Hair colour, thickness and density
- The area being treated
- Medical history and medication
- Previous reactions to laser treatment
- Any underlying cause of increased hair growth
White, grey, very blonde and many red hairs respond poorly because they contain insufficient suitable pigment. Fine facial hair also requires careful assessment, as it may respond poorly and can occasionally become more noticeable after treatment.
Areas That Can Be Assessed
Common treatment areas include:
- Upper lip and chin
- Beard area and neck
- Underarms
- Arms and legs
- Chest, abdomen and back
- Bikini area
We assess each area separately because hair characteristics and skin sensitivity vary across the body.
Ingrown Hairs and Shaving Bumps
Reducing hair growth may also help people who experience recurrent ingrown hairs and shaving bumps, particularly around the beard and neck.
Your clinician will assess whether laser is appropriate and whether inflammation or another skin condition needs treatment first.
What Happens at Your Consultation?
We review your medical history, examine your skin and hair, and discuss the results you hope to achieve.
Your practitioner explains the proposed treatment, likely course, costs, aftercare and possible side effects. A patch test may form part of your assessment before a full session.
If laser is unlikely to give a worthwhile result, we will explain why and discuss suitable alternatives.
Preparing for Treatment
Follow the clinic’s preparation instructions, including guidance on shaving before your appointment.
Avoid waxing, plucking or threading before and during your course, as these remove the hair that the laser needs to target. Avoid tanning and tell us about recent sun exposure, new medication or changes in your skin.
Naturally dark skin and recently tanned skin require different considerations; treatment may need to be postponed after tanning.
What Does Treatment Feel Like?
You may feel brief pulses of heat or a snapping sensation. Cooling helps protect the skin’s surface and manage discomfort.
Protective eyewear is worn throughout treatment. Appointment length depends on the size of the area.
Recovery and Aftercare
Temporary redness, warmth and swelling around the follicles are common. Your skin may feel sensitive after treatment.
We provide instructions on gentle skincare, sun protection and when to resume exercise, heat exposure and active skincare products.
Possible complications include burns, blistering, darker or lighter patches of skin and, less commonly, scarring. Increased hair growth can occasionally occur, particularly around the face and neck. Your practitioner will discuss the risks relevant to you.
Results and Treatment Courses
A course of treatments is usually needed, with intervals tailored to the area and hair growth cycle. We review your response as treatment progresses.
Results vary, and maintenance appointments may be needed. Hormonal changes can also affect future growth, particularly on the face.
Laser hair removal reduces hair growth over time; it does not guarantee permanent removal of every hair.
