Laser Treatment for Lip Pigmentation
Lip pigmentation is a challenge for many people. No one wants discoloured, pigmented lips due to ageing, smoking, dehydration or sun exposure. So, we offer a lip bleaching laser treatment that lightens the entire lip area. However, we understand that laser treatments can seem impossibly scary and confusing if you’ve never had one before. Thus, I have enlisted the help of Dr Kamryn, our lead aesthetic doctor and clinical dermatologist. I have asked Dr Kamryn to provide some background on the laser lip treatment and take us through the laser lip treatment safety. We believe everyone should feel comfortable and knowledgeable before making decisions regarding skincare. In this way, we hope to educate and communicate effectively so that you, too, can be a skincare expert.

What is Laser Lip Bleaching?
Laser lip bleaching, or laser lip lightening, is a noninvasive, painless, and effective procedure. It breaks down pigment in the lips and improves the appearance of discolouration by fading out the pigment in the skin, i.e., it treats hyperpigmentation of lips. The mechanism of action involves breaking down the pigment with the help of a laser and getting it dissolved and drained by your lymphatic system.
Who can have Lip Lightening Treatment?
Laser lip bleaching can be used for hyperpigmented lips. The effects of the treatment depend on the cause of hyperpigmentation. For example, pigmentation could be due to genetics, lifestyle, external factors, etc., so removing the cause is the first step.
- Treatment for smoker’s lips: Laser lip lightening is the best treatment for smokers’ lips. It targets the pigmentation and gives you lighter lips. The results depend upon the depth of pigmentation and the number of sessions. The deeper the pigmentation, the more sessions are required to achieve the pigmentation of your previously unstained lips.
- Treatment to lighten lips: If you don’t have pigmentation on your lips but want to make them even lighter, you can have laser lip bleaching with a hydration injection. This will improve the overall texture of your lips, making them smoother and lighter.
What are the potential risks and side effects?
There are no significant risks, you might get red and swollen lips right after the treatment but that also settles within a couple of hours. Also, some people experience dry lips during the treatment course.
How do we minimise the side effects and risks of laser lip treatment?
To minimise these effects, you can apply soothing gels such as Aloe vera. Serums containing vitamin B5 help hydrate the lips. However, to improve the overall texture of the lips, it is advised to have hydrating injections thrice, once every six weeks.
Furthermore, we strongly recommend following all the specific pre-care and post-care protocols that our team of dedicated professionals will provide at your initial consultation and throughout your treatment. For example, we suggest you refrain from using tanning beds and limit sun exposure 30 days before your session. Also, any laser hair removal in the lip area or chemical peels on the face should be avoided 7 days before your treatment. Finally, on the day of your appointment, avoid wearing makeup.
We suggest maximum sun protection for 30 days after your treatment. We also recommend applying a lip balm containing SPF30+ reapplied throughout the day. You may notice slight erythema and swelling in the lip area; however, this will subside after a couple of hours. Our aestheticians will advise all necessary after-care to follow after the treatment to maximise your results and avoid complications.
Final Words
In conclusion, laser lip lightening is a safe and effective treatment for making lips lighter and brighter. Furthermore, bleaching the lips enhances the overall appearance of your face. Lip hydration injections also help get the results quicker when combined with laser lip bleaching. This treatment is perfect for getting rid of stains on the lips because of smoking, hot drinks, and the hyperpigmentation that occurs on lips generally. Some people only have a dark lip border, which treats all kinds of concerns regarding the lightening of lips.
