Laser Hair Removal: 5 Common Misconceptions

Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal (LHR) is a popular cosmetic procedure that offers a long-term reduction of unwanted hair. However, many misconceptions surround this treatment. In this blog post, we delve into the science and misconceptions of LHR and introduce our new laser hair removal machine!

How Does LHR Work?

Our specialists use selective photothermolysis during your LHR treatment to eliminate unwanted hair. The heat emitting from the laser kills the pigments in the hair follicles, destroying them and preventing further hair growth in treatment areas. Our LHR treatment targets many different body parts, including the face, underarms, back, bikini area, and legs.

LHR removes in-grown hairs, eliminating the need to shave and wax regularly. It’s also the best procedure to target unwanted hairs from different areas of your body without damaging surrounding areas due to its high precision.

Furthermore, LHR saves time. So, if you want a quick hair removal process, meet our full-body laser technician professionals to help. Large treatment areas like the back and legs are treated within an hour, while small treatment areas like the upper lip are done in a minute. In the long run, LHR saves you money. Rather than spend on constant shaving, waxing and tweezing appointments, a treatment eradicates unwanted hair permanently.

Our LHR works for both men and women. At the end of the day, hair is hair, and at Continental Skin Clinic, the important thing is that we treat your concerns regardless of gender. So whether you’re a man or woman who desperately wants to be hair-free for the foreseeable future, you can receive treatment with us!

Now, onto the juicy bit, you’ve all been waiting for; I’ve gathered 5 common laser hair removal misconceptions and asked our team of doctors and laser technicians to help me debunk them!

5 Laser Hair Removal Myths Debunked

Misconception 1: Laser Hair Removal Is Painful

If you’re one of the many people who believe LHR is a painful procedure, you’re not alone! However, you’ll be pleased to know that with advancements in technology and numbing creams available, the discomfort associated with laser hair removal is minimal. There are two reasons for any pain to be experienced: the area and the skin tone.

The Area and Skin Tone:

Firstly, the pain really depends on the area being treated; if the area being treated is typically a sensitive area, such as the underarms or bikini line, then you’re likely to experience slight discomfort to minimal pain. Secondly, the darker your skin tone then the more discomfort you are likely to experience during LHR. This is, unfortunately, because the laser is working to target hair (which naturally has a dark pigment). Therefore, the darker the pigment of the skin the more likely the laser will also target the skin as well as the hair. Now, this is not the end of the world! Our clinic will soon offer the latest laser hair removal machine from Lutronic, Clarity II. This laser hair removal machine has a laser which is made for all skin tones. It adapts the laser for darker skin tones by adjusting the laser’s wavelength and pulse duration. Therefore, allowing us to conduct LHR on darker skin tones without the usual discomfort experienced makes the procedure more accessible and comfortable for all skin types.

Misconception 2: Laser Hair Removal Is Not Effective

I don’t think this misconception is as common as it used to be. But nonetheless, there are a few out there who don’t understand how a laser could remove hair long term. This is completely understandable if you don’t have the background knowledge to see the effectiveness of using a laser for hair removal! So, let’s break down the science. The laser wavelength emits a light which is designed to target the pigment in your hair follicles. The light energy of the laser then converts to heat, and this is what damages the hair follicles, thus inhibiting any future hair growth. So, how does laser hair removal work? By damaging the hair follicle (which produces hair), over multiple sessions this stops any future hair growth from being possible. It is absolutely effective at doing this. However, multiple sessions spread out over the course of a year will be required to ensure the long-term results you’re looking for.

Misconception 3: Laser Hair Removal Is Only for Light Skin Tones

We’ve briefly covered this in misconception 1, so we know this misconception is old news! Historically, LHR was more effective on lighter skin tones due to the contrast between hair and skin colour. However, advancements in technology, such as our soon-to-be new laser hair removal machine Clarity II, now allow us to safely and effectively treat darker skin tones. This opens up the benefits of LHR to a wider range of patients. Which allows us to treat all skin tones and many hair types (with pigment).

Misconception 4: Laser Hair Removal Is Permanent

Does laser hair removal remove hair permanently? While it’s true that LHR offers a long-term reduction of unwanted hair, it is not entirely permanent. As we mentioned before, maintenance sessions once every few years may be required to maintain your desired results. But as long as you’re willing to play the long game, you’ll be hair-free for the rest of your life!

Essentially, some hair may regrow over time, but it will be finer and lighter than before. Therefore, maintenance sessions may be required to inhibit future hair growth. You will find dead hair that may begin to shed five to thirty days after your procedure. Although this may seem like new hair growth, it’s not. They will naturally find their way out of the follicle, but you can exfoliate the area to facilitate the process. We also recommend avoiding sun exposure and using sunscreen outdoors to protect the treatment area.

If you’re still unsure, there are other routes to take if you want the appearance of less hair. For example, our laser hair bleaching treatment is very effective at bleaching the pigment of the hair to white. This treatment is the easiest way to lighten unwanted hair with just one procedure, giving you the results you were looking for.

Misconception 5: Laser Hair Removal Is Unsafe

I can understand the resistance to believing a ‘laser’ could be safe for your skin or body. But this misconception is coming from an idea of lasers such that we see in the movies. Trust me, the lasers that skin clinics use are literally designed for the use of the body and your skin. So, you are in very safe hands, especially at Continental Skin Clinic– our team consists of GMC-registered doctors and advanced laser technicians. LHR is a safe procedure when performed by qualified professionals like us using FDA-approved devices. Our clinic adheres to strict safety protocols to ensure the well-being of our patients during treatment. With the latest technology and experienced practitioners, LHR is a safe and effective option for achieving smooth, hair-free skin.

Final Words

In conclusion, LHR is a safe, effective, and long-lasting solution for reducing unwanted hair. By debunking these common misconceptions, I hope I’ve given some clarity and reassurance to anyone considering beginning their hair-free journey with us! As always, I’ll see you in the next one 🙂
